How It All Started
When the boys were young, I always imagined giving them the kind of childhood I experienced. My wife would be home with them, and I would work to provide for our family. That decision led to many years of 70-plus-hour workweeks. While I was grateful to provide, the years seemed to pass faster than I ever expected, and I realized I was missing many of life's most important moments.
As my oldest son approached his tenth birthday, I woke up one morning with an idea that would eventually change everything.
A time capsule.
After talking with my wife, we decided to make it happen. Over the next several months, we carefully gathered memories from his childhood. On his tenth birthday, surrounded by family, we sealed the capsule with the promise that it would not be opened again until his thirtieth birthday.
When our youngest son turned ten, we created another capsule for him.
Over the years, I shared the idea with countless parents. Everyone loved it. Everyone said it was something they wanted to do.
But very few ever did.
Years later, when my sons, now grown men, finally opened their capsules, I witnessed something I can hardly put into words.
They laughed.
They remembered.
They cried.
Old toys, photographs, keepsakes, handwritten notes, and small artifacts instantly transported them back to the boys they once were.
But the most meaningful treasures weren't objects at all.
They were the letters.
One written by themselves. One from their brother. One from their mother. One from me.
Watching them read those words decades later reminded me that memories fade, but love preserved never does.
Afterward, I continued telling people about the experience. Once again, everyone loved the idea.
Yet almost no one followed through.
Eventually I realized why. Creating something this meaningful takes time. People are busy. Most don't know where to begin or what to include. And too often, the best intentions are postponed until they quietly disappear.
